About Stjernen Ung

    About Stjernen Ung

Stjernen Hockey Fredrikstad (Stjernen Ung) is one of oldest and best ice hockey clubs in Norway. We were founded in 1960 by a group of young friends that practiced skating at Tollbodplassen in Fredrikstad. In 1970 our arena Stjernehallen was completed – and in 2024 we will move into a brand new arena, Arena Fredrikstad, with two ice rinks.

In april 2021 Stjernen Ung will open a new off ice center, called «StjerneVærste». The center is 1800 square meters (19.375 square feet) and containing shooting ramps, skills area, basket/floor ball/volleyball/tennis qourt, wrestling and parkour/gymnastics area.

Until 2010, the Stjernen was one united club, but due to new regulations, the club was divided in two independent clubs, Stjernen Elite and Stjernen Ung (Stjernen Young).

Stjernen Elite is among the top clubs in the Norwegian elite league – and the club has become Norwegian champions twice – in 1981 and in 1986.  Stjernen became number 1 in the elite league series in 1987. Now we are on the way back to the very top in Norwegian ice hockey. Building a strong junior department and junior teams in Stjernen Ung is a key to reach our goal.

Stjernen want to develop more local players to our elite team.

Stjernen Ung has arond 700 members and organizes all teams and all players from hockey school up to U21. We have around 200 players on our youth teams, in addition to 120 players at the hockey school. Over 20 trainers are in action every week in Stjernehallen. Every year about 30 players from hockey school move up to our rookie team.

Stjernen is a volunteer club, with a full time Sports Director and semi professional coaches. Unity and community are our most important values. We work for joy and development, where our primary goal is to develop players with a strong character and healthy and good attitudes. We start this work when children are young. We believe developing good human beings also makes good hockey players, since our sport requires athletes with good work ethic, respect and disiplin.

Stjernen Ung has an ambition that all players, regardless of level, will evolve based on his/her own level. We want to facilitate individual development and good workouts that challenge all players on and off ice. Basic skating skills and stick handling is essential to become a good hockey player. We practice these qualities a lot, especially at a young age, but also later.

In Stjernen Ung we recognize that strong physics is essential to develop as a hockey player in the teens. We start early with basic physics training, combined with play and fun when the kids are young. In Stjernen Ung the word «training» also means being physically tired.

Learning to perform for the team and your buddies are attitudes we want to teach our players from an early age.

Many believe hockey is an expensive sport and that it is time consuming. We do not claim that our sport is for free, but until kids are 12 to 14 years, ice hockey is not significantly more expensive sports than others. You can get good hockey equipment for less than 1000 kroner and children skates for around 500 kroner. This kind of equipment works fine the first few years. Besides that, you can get a lot of used equipment for a low price.

What we do not deny, is that ice hockey is a sport that requires engaged parents. Luckily it is easy to be engaged and involved in ice hockey as a mom or dad. When you experience the joy and the enthusiasm watching your child is on the ice, you’ll understand how meaningful it is to spend time on hockey and Stjernen.

We hope to see you in Stjernehallen, as a spectator, player or as a parent. You’re very welcome!
